Bann’s Under 14s progressed to the Semi Finals of the Ulster Under 14 Super League with an emphatic win over their hard-running but ultimately out-powered Monaghan counterparts on a bitterly cold windy day at Rifle Park.
Going into the quarter-final on the back of an unbeaten league campaign and as defending champions, expectations were high among the Squad’s supporters of another successful run.
Playing into strong breeze in the first half, Bann took the lead through two Darragh McCann tries, one converted by James Waddell and a further try by Matthew Magee. The home team were strong in possession showing great commitment around the breakdown and using set piece ball well despite the prevailing conditions.
Turning round with the breeze in the second half, Bann opened up the half with two further tries from skipper McCann, one converted by Pearse Magill. Playing some excellent free-flowing rugby, there were significant contributions from forwards and backs and this led to further tries from No 8 McCann, Fraser Cunningham and Reece Evans. All of the squad selected including the replacements got valuable time on the pitch.
Head Coach Noel Irwin was as always measured in his post-match comments. “This was another good performance but there are some things to work on – dealing with offensive kicks and greater communication in attack.
“Thanks as always to our great band of supporters for their fantastic support on the day. Harder challenges lie ahead but the Squad have made a fantastic start to the defence of their Super League title.”
