LARNE 19 BANN SECONDS 22
Another battling, never-say-die performance from Bann Seconds saw then avenge their first round Junior Cup defeat to Larne, this time with league points at stake in their final Conference League game of the season.
Playing against the strong wind in the first half, Bann had to work hard to get early territory in the Larne “22”. And Aaron Kennedy’s successful penalty strike ensured they did not leave without reward.
But the home side used the elements to drive Bann back downfield, running in a converted try. Kennedy’s second penalty reduced the leeway to a single point but by the interval the home side’s lead had been extended to 12-6 thanks to an unconverted try.
A third penalty from the boot of the Bann skipper early in the second half was soon followed by Bann’s only try of the game. Out-half Ben Thompson attacked the line, linking with Jonny Little for the centre to find Andy Denver coming through on a finely judged line, with the full-back sprinting the 25 metres to finish off.
Kennedy added the conversion and struck over a fourth penalty to take his side 12-19 clear. In the dying minutes Larne took advantage of a series of penalties awarded against the visitors, and a yellow card, to go in for the converted try that would have seen the points shared.
But from one final attack Bann won another penalty and Kennedy again found the target to claim the four points for his team.
