BANN SECONDS 17 BALLYMENA 12
While Bann Firsts were picking up a precious five points at Eaton Park, the Seconds were at home to Ballymena Seconds in a double-header Second XV League game.
And a spirited display from the young side saw them emerge with the win and the eight points that go a long way towards securing their place in the same league next season.
Prop Ross Haughey crossed from close range for the opening try after his pack had gone through the phases, with Aaron Kennedy adding the conversion.
But by the break the visitors were on level terms, fairly reflecting a tough battle between two well-matched teams.
Bann re-took the lead after taking advantage of Ballymena mis-handling well inside the home half. John Porter hacked the ball through and Kennedy won the race to touch down, adding the conversion for a 14-7 lead which he later extended by a successful penalty kick.
A second try pulled Ballymena back within five points and they went all out in the closing stages for the winning score. Just when it seemed that the Bann line might be breached a third time the referee penalised the attacking side at a ruck, the danger was cleared and the home side celebrated a significant success.
In a finely balanced game it took a resolute defensive effort, spearheaded by Andrew Jackson and Scott Cromie, to ensure victory.
