DONAGHADEE U-14 33 BANN U-14 33
Bann’s Under 14s returned to action with a friendly against Donaghadee on a cold, bracing day in the seaside town. The match was divided into 3 x 20 minute periods to allow the entire Squad sufficient game time. Both teams played adventurous, strong, running rugby and it was a great advert for Youth rugby at this level assisted by a referee who encouraged the game to flow. .
Bann dominated the early stages opening up a 26-7 lead with tries from Captain Kieffer McKnight, Scott Craig, a brace from Jamie Carville and three conversions from Dennis Kerr. The second period saw Bann make a raft of substitutions and it understandably took time for the subs to get into the rhythm of the game. The second period saw ‘Dee scored two tries, one unconverted, to give the score a slightly flattering look.
The final period saw Bann make further substitutions with Jamie Carville scoring his third try again converted by Kerr. The home team scored two converted tries to leave the scores tied at 33 apiece.
Coach Noel Irwin was effusive in his praise of his players’ endeavours. “The whole Squad should take great credit from this fixture”, he said after the game. “Our rucking has improved exponentially as we complete each game and our set piece is very solid. Both sets of re-starts were a vast improvement on the previous match and our defensive line speed continues to improve.”
He did however pick up on a couple of areas where improvement was necessary. “Tackling remains something for the Squad to work on as does our movement with the ball in hand. All in all this match was a great spectacle and all those who took part should be very pleased with their efforts.”
