U15s dominate Letterkenny in cup Share
February 5, 2011
Bann's U-15 side had home advantage over Letterkenny in the first game of the Group Stage of the Ulster Cup. Despite missing several players due to ski trips, Bann immediately put pressure on the large visitors' pack and from quick second phase ball James Waugh outpaced the Letterkenny defence to score an excellent solo try. Several minutes later the same player produced another superb solo effort, out-flanking three defenders to scorch home from inside his own half. The Bann pack although lighter won several scrums against the head with Robin Hewitt, playing his first match at hooker, performing very well. Towards the end of the first half Josh Cromie raced in from a ruck on the "22" to score under the posts, the extras being added by the impressive Michael Moore to give a half-time score of 21-0. Much to their credit Letterkenny did not give up and for a period they had Bann on the back foot. But with five minutes remaining the try-scoring machine Waugh grabbed his fourth try of the day to cap an outstanding personal performance. With virtually the last play of the match Bann scored the best try of the game. Some great inter-play between forwards and backs saw Lee Jackson's perfect inside pass put Josh Cromie in for his second try under the posts. Michael Moore added the extras giving him a total of five from seven kicks, an excellent morning's work. Overall this has been an excellent start to the campaign though more focus is required at training, if the team is to progress in this competition.
The second half saw some changes in personnel, but this did not affect the level of performance and indeed the lead was soon increased by another Waugh try. Not to be outdone Cameron Cromie, Waugh's midfield partner, scored a well-taken try to take his team's lead to 33-0.
