Flying Dubem grabs four for rampant U13s Share
BANBRIDGE U13s 66 Inishowen 12March 5, 2011
With an interval lead of 20-12 Bann started the second half the way they started the first. Alister McDowell caught the defence out when he peeled off the back of a ruck and scored in the corner. With four of the U12s gracing the back line at one stage the threat of the Bann backs was very evident. In particular Rory Shannon playing his first game for the U13s slotted seamlessly in at scrum half providing excellent distribution. The threat of the centre pairing of Jones and Dubem yielded a final tally of five tries. Bann squad:-
After the loss inspirational captain Ben Thompson last week to injury, Toby Baxter took over the leadership for this important cup tie.
Almost from the kick-off Bann were in the Inishowen "22" and when Matthew Blain broke from the back of the ruck and fed the flying Dubem Ajeh the centre duly scored in the corner.
The visitors took Bann back into defensive mode and a knock-on led to an Inishowen scrum. Josh Chambers took this against the head and the quick thinking William Cousins picked up at No 8 and was tackled just short of the line. But with the help of his pack he was able to off-load to the supporting Josh Chambers who was unstoppable from five metres, touching down in the corner.
Straightaway Bann were back in the opposition "22" and once again Chambers took Inishowen ball and the quick thinking Max Buller saw the gap and scored in the corner.
Inishowen were awarded a penalty and with the Bann boys retreating their big centre was able to outwit the defence and score under the posts. Inishowen again took advantage of Bann's vulnerability in retreat, their No 12 went on a darting run and with several missed tackles scored under the posts.
Not to be out-done William Cousins finished the half with his now trademark try from the base of the scrum.
The loose re-start drop kick went to the impressive Charlie Jones who danced and weaved his way to score leaving the defence in disarray.
Next it was the hard-working Baxter who got rewarded with his own try after Bann's impressive work at the ruck had won quality ball. McDowell was quickly in for his second touchdown.
The next two tries came from the powerhouse Ajeh who was having a great day in defence and attack. Baxter got in for his second before Dubem got over again for his fourth which McDowell converted.
This was a superb performance from both forwards and backs who ended up with a try tally of six each. The work rate of the forwards around the rucks and support play in the loose were evident throughout. With Samuel Mount moving to the back row this meant that with Baxter and Cousins three of the fastest Bann players were in an impressive loose unit.
Ross Cartmill stepped up from the 12s to take control of the backs from No 10. His excellent reading of the game and distribution skills, complemented by his ferocious tackling, earns him the ‘man of the match' accolade.
