Carson brace earns Bann third Ulster League win Share
Malone 14 BANBRIDGE 1STs 26March 5, 2011
Banbridge picked up their third Ulster League win of the season, scoring four tries against AIL Division Two side Malone in Belfast to secure the bonus point. In well-nigh perfect conditions both teams took every opportunity to run the ball, but Bann always had the edge, with a solid display by the pack providing the foundation for a fully-deserved win. Dale Carson was first to register for Bann, after the pack's scrummaging power allowed the No 8 to touch down at a 5-metre scrum in the 13th minute, with Ben Purvis adding the conversion. Two minutes later a yellow card reduced the home side to 14 men but they were back at full strength before Bann picked up their second score, winger Stephen Cowan collecting a loose ball and sprinting in from 30 metres. When a Bann player was yellow-carded in the 39th minute, Malone took advantage of their superior numbers and some ineffectual tackling to put centre Josh Pentland in for a try and conversion. Carson picked up his second try on 66 minutes and six minutes from the end Ashley Finlay rounded off a fine back movement for the visitors' fourth try. The two further conversions from Purvis stretched Bann's lead to 26-7 before a late try and conversion from Malone out-half Mark Wilson brought matters to a conclusion. Bann have no game this weekend, their next outing being the re-arranged Ulster League game at home to Belfast Harlequins on Saturday 19th March, ko 2.30pm.
