BANN SECONDS 5 OMAGH SECONDS 54
After their impressive Towns’ Cup win over Lurgan the previous week, Bann Seconds were hopeful of making a winning start to their Second XV League campaign.
There was nothing in the opening exchanges to suggest otherwise as the home side had Omagh on the back foot. A kickable penalty opportunity was rejected in favour of the lineout option. But the punt didn’t make touch and that mistake came to typify Bann’s play as basic errors eventually handed the initiative to Omagh.
After 15 minutes of shared possession and territory Omagh made the breakthrough, with their centre stepping inside a tackle to create a try under the posts. A counter-attack from their own 10 metre line yielded a second converted try and by the half hour the visitors were 19 points ahead after their forwards had driven a maul 20 metres to the home line.
Bann managed to get on the scoreboard before the interval, Ben Thompson’s loop pass putting Chris Patterson in for a try that went unconverted.
That should have given the home side something to build on after the break. But instead it was Omagh who stretched their lead with a fourth touchdown. The loss through injury of lock Keith Adams dealt another blow to the home side’s morale and an increasingly confident Omagh side showed their full array of off-loading skills as they ran in a further four converted tries to complete the annihilation.
