OPHIR U-14s   19      BANN U-14s   36

Bann Under-14s reached the Quarter Finals of the Ulster Cup with a thrilling 36-19 victory over muscular, hardworking and enterprising Ophir opponents.

The winners’ try scorers were Dennis Kerr, Kieffer McKnight, Jamie Carville, Aidan Niblock, Isaac Finch and Darren Sloane. Dennis Kerr added three conversions.

Bann Coach Noel Irwin was delighted with his team’s win but also expressed praise for the spirit in which the game was played. “Plaudits go to both teams for playing rugby in the right way”, he commented after the game. “I thought that we were excellent with ball in hand, maintained a strong defensive line throughout the duration of the match, scrummaged and rucked well and up front never allowed the bigger and heavy Ophir counterparts time to establish any patterns of play.

“There were quality performances from Bann players all over the pitch. Half backs Alan Woods and Denis Kerr both had their best games of the season and Isaac Finch had a storming game at full back.

“Up front Harry Agnew, Captain Kieffer McKnight, Jake Smyth, Luke Loughlin, Rian Evans, Joshua Adamson and Scott Craig all impressed. In the backs, Jamie Carville and Darren Sloane make a terrific centre pairing with Aleks Przybylski and Aidan Niblock comfortably having their best games of the season.  Sub Andrew Cairns continues to improve and Conor Corrigan showed some classy touches when he came on during the second half. Unused replacements were Jacob Henry and Thomas McGrath both of whom are important members of the Squad.

“But my Man of the Match was prop Conor Doherty who rounded off a magnificent performance with two turnovers that Jack McGrath would have been proud to have performed. We await word of our next opponents but we will have home advantage.”

The coach expressed “massive thanks to our supporters who gave the Squad superb vocal encouragement throughout the entire match”.
