RANDALSTOWN THIRDS 33 BANN FOURTHS 34
Bann Fourths overturned a 33-12 interval scoreline with four second half tries earning them a bonus point win by the narrowest of margins.
While Mattie Whitlow notched up a hat-trick after the break, Team Manager Colm Broderick was keen to emphasise that it was a real team effort that earned the side a maximum return from their first league game of the season. “We looked down and out at the break,” he said. “But the heads never went down and with Stephen Cowan exercising great control from out-half, the rest of the lads responded and we eventually got over the line.”
Cowan had converted his own try in the first half with Jonny Murray’s unconverted touchdown making up Bann’s tally of first half points. But meantime defensive frailties had allowed the home side to amass what seemed an insurmountable total.
Then came that second half revival, spearheaded by Cowan, skipper Ryan Ringland and Stuart Marshall. With the latter’s lineout prowess providing quality ball, Bann were able to put together the phases that let Whitlow cross the whitewash three times, with Stefan Patterson’s touchdown and Alan Thompson’s conversion sealing the win for the visitors.
