The Under 14s got their Ulster Cup campaign off to a fantastic start with a comprehensive 48-0 victory over their spirited Cavan counterparts.

On a bright, crisp late February morning and playing for the first time this season on the main pitch, both teams were intent on running and moving the ball quickly. Home scores came through tries from Darren Sloane (3), Jamie Carville (2), Jake Smyth (2) and Daniel Wilson (1). Dennis Kerr capped a good performance at out-half with four conversions.

The pack played well in the tight with Conor Doherty and Joshua Adamson holding the scrum up well. Some very accurate line out throws topped off an excellent debut at hooker for Harry Agnew, with all his previous rugby having been played at flanker.

Locks Daniel Wilson and Jake Smyth along with Kieffer McKnight, Rian Evans and Scott Craig were omnipresent in the loose and at the breakdown.  Half backs Alan Woods and Dennis Kerr kept the game flowing well, with centres Jamie Carville and Darren Sloane proving hard to contain.

Wingers Tom Ewart and Aleks Przybylski ran excellent lines and gave the team width, allowing it to play an expansive running game.   Full back Isaac Finch had one of his best games of the season and was very unlucky not to score. All of the subs who came on – Jacob Henry, Andrew Cairns, Thomas McGrath, Luke Loughlin, Todd Bryson, Conor Corrigan, Bradley Harshaw, Ross McKee and Aidan Niblock showed up well.

There are still things to work on – defensive line speed and alignment, supporting the ball carrier and movement around the pitch, and undoubtedly sterner tests will lie ahead in what is hoped will be a long Cup run. However, this was an excellent start and the Squad now travel to Ophir on the 17th March for the next round. Finally it was good to see Andrew Harris back with the Squad. We all wish him well on his recovery.
