MALONE U-14s 39 BANN U-14s 22
On a dank, overcast morning Bann Under 14s travelled to Gibson Park to take on their Malone counterparts in good heart. With both teams committed to running the ball at every opportunity, it was no surprise it was a high scoring , with the home team running out 39-22 winners. It was a good advert for Ulster rugby at this level.
Bann’s try scorers were Jake Smyth, Kieffer McKnight, Darren Sloane and Jamie Carville with Dennis Kerr adding one conversion. There was a vast improvement in Bann’s’ all-round play from the previous league match, particularly in the set pieces and in and around the breakdown. It was disappointing that the defensive line speed was patchy at best and that tackles were missed at key times of the match, particularly in conceding a try just before half time. In addition it didn’t help that the referee allowed two home team tries from moves that involved questionable passes, just as Bann appeared to be gaining the upper hand up front.
While there has been definite improvement from the first game of the season, there are a number of things to work on – defensive line speed, more effective tackling and on-field communication. The coaches are all looking forward to working with the Squad to secure our first win of the season at Balyclare this weekend.
