BANN U-14s 17 ARMAGH U-14s 17
Bann Under 14s took to the field for their first league game of the season and did well to share the points with a strong tackling , straight running Armagh team. On a morning made for running rugby, both sides showed good intent in moving the ball wide, with only good tackling preventing either team from taking an early lead.
The home side opened the scoring as a well-worked move saw Captain Kiefer McKnight touch down to the right of the posts. The try was unconverted. Armagh hit back and after a series of rucks and some ambivalent home team tackling, they levelled the scores. For the remainder of the first half both teams continued to play free flowing rugby and were each unlucky not to add further scores.
The second half saw a converted Jamie Carville try and an unconverted Darren Sloane score stretch the home teams lead to 17-5. Armagh levelled through one converted and one unconverted score.
As this was the first outing of the Squad in the 2017/18 season, there were a lot of positives. Twelve players made their debut at this level, set pieces were well controlled, backs gelled well together, the tackling by and large was excellent and the Squad played the game in an excellent positive spirit. On the negative side the rucking wasn’t quite what it should be, the ball wasn’t moved as quickly as it should have and the defensive line speed was quixotic at best.
But all in all a really good and positive start to the season and each player should be proud of his contribution. The coaches will continue to work to improve the Squad’s skill set during the week before they take on Malone in the first away game of the season next Saturday.
