BANN THIRDS 7 CLOGHER VALLEY SECONDS 36
Bann Thirds’ lineout for this Junior League game against Clogher Valley had something of an experimental look about it, with Alan Thompson lining out at out-half for the first time in a career which has seen him fill most other positions and hooker Andrew Jackson trying his hand at prop for the first time.
The two ‘new boys’ did well, but in the end the Bann side failed overall to match the physicality of the bruisers from Fivemiletown.
After a seventh minute penalty had re-bounded off an upright Valley regained possession and forced their way over at the posts for a converted try. Ten minutes later they were 0-12 up after scoring off a scrum in front of the home posts.
The visitors’ formidable set piece earned a third try from a pushover scrum and by the interval the bonus point was in the bag. A period of pressure on the Valley line ended with a hack through on a loose pass and the visiting full-back’s neat skills did the rest as he projected the ball over the 80 metres to the try line.
Bann played their best rugby at the start of the second half and some neat inter-passing off a scrum saw Thompson finish off with a touchdown at the base of the posts, Jordan Mullan adding the conversion.
But the final quarter belonged to Valley as they ran in two more tries for the win that avenged the early season defeat on their own patch.
