Newry U14s 5-35 Bann U14s
“With improving performances under their belt, the U14s travelled to Newry in good spirits looking for their first win of the season.
Straight from kick off Bann showed their attacking intent and were unlucky when Will Cromie was bundled into touch just short of the home line. The away side’s pressure final paid, when No.8 Jack Sherrard raced clear from a scrum on the half way line, to open the scoring. He was followed soon after by Philip Jackson , who outpaced the the home defence from a scrum on their 22.
Declan Brady opened his account for the season, when after a series of rucks on the team teams line, he showed no little skill in beating the cover defence to score in the corner. Lewis Kemp added the final score of the half, when he finished off a fine move involving both backs and forwards to score in the corner.
The second half followed the same pattern, with the away team dominating possession up front particularly in the tight. The whole team rucking very well and the backs looking dangerous at every opportunity. Further tries from Declan Brady and Lewis Kemp, with a consolation try from the home team , rounded off the match scoring and to complete a fine first victory of the season for the Squad.
The forwards were dominant in the tight with great scrummaging and line out play, strong and quick rucking and the continuity of play between backs and forwards was a clear sign of the Squad’s improvement. If the quality of defence continues to improve as expected, combined with continued hard work in practice to improve competitiveness at the breakdown and in the tight, the Squad will continue to grow in confidence and the recent improvements in results will be sustained. ”
